Serenity in Marcia Marsted's "Garden of Whimsy." Photos: dotCANTON
A burst of blue, with a lion on the watch.
Marcia Marsted nods in agreement when a visitor comments that her property looks different than it did the last time he was there, just before her September 2010 show as part of The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program.
Of course it does, she says, this is July, that was September.
“I (moved the date up) on purpose,” Marsted says. “If I do it again next year, it will be at the end of June (when, blooms being blooms, it will look different again).”
Marsted’s “Garden of Whimsy” at 125 Indian Hill Road in Canton will be open to the public this Sunday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., once again in conjunction with The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program. It is a rain or shine event and no registration is required. Admission for a self-guided tour is $5 per person; children 12 and under are admitted free.
Marsted is continuing to recover from a devastating three-car crash on Avon Mountain that left her in critical condition less than three weeks after her Sept. 12, 2010, “Open Days” show. She has undergone multiple surgeries to repair injuries to her arms and legs, most recently on May 3. She says a metal plate needs to come out of her left arm in October.
The Avon Mountain crash occurred as Marsted was returning home from a fishing trip with her husband, Jeff, to Idaho and Wyoming. On Wednesday evening, July 20, Marcia and Jeff went fishing for the first time since the accident, testing their luck on the Farmington River in New Hartford.
Marcia, who lists fishing and photography among her passions, came up empty, but “Jeff caught (and released) a brown trout.” she says.
A two-time cancer survivor, Marsted published “About My Hair: A Journey to Recovery” in 2001, and in 2004 she established the Capelli d’Angeli Foundation, which is dedicated to helping women artists with cancer.
The Garden Conservancy is based in Cold Spring, N.Y. Its stated mission “is to preserve exceptional American gardens for the education and enjoyment of the public.”
The Open Days program runs from March 26 to early November and includes gardens from southern Maine to southern California. Click here to find out more about The Garden Conservancy.

Steamy photos taken by dotCANTON.com at last year's Lobsterfest: lobsters ...
 chowder ...
It’s time to start talking and thinking lobsters, as in Lobsterfest and Lobster Loop.
The 31st annual Lobsterfest, a three-day bender of lobster, New England clam chowder and corn on the cob, begins five weeks from today on Friday evening, Aug. 19, at the Canton Volunteer Fire Company on Canton Springs Road.
The Friday evening eatin’ begins at 6 and runs to 9:30 p.m.
 and corn.
You can do it all again on Saturday, Aug. 20, anytime from noon to 9:30 p.m., or on Sunday, Aug. 21, from noon to 4 p.m. (if the food lasts that long).
The price per meal is $18, and that gets you lobsta, chowda, corn and a beverage.
A year ago, Canton Voluntary Fire Company member Corey Russo told dotCANTON that Friday is always the busiest time at Lobsterfest, with about 1,800 dinners consumed between 6 and 9:30 p.m.
He said then that the company anticipated 2,200 more dinners would be ordered between noon and 9:30 p.m. on Day 2. Russo said 4,200 lobsters were purchased up front for last year’s event, and that more were obtainable if needed. He said the company purchased 4,500 ears of corn. A year ago, Russo guessed that 350 gallons of New England clam chowder would be consumed on Friday night alone.
This year, you might be looking for something to eat at noon on Sunday if you’ve spent the morning participating in the 20th annual Lobster Loop, a 5K road race and noncompetitive health walk that begins and ends at the Canton Town Green. Start time on Sunday, Aug. 21 is 8:30 a.m.
The nonrefundable entry fee is $20 if received on or before Aug. 17, and $25 on the day of the race. Event day registration opens at 7:30 a.m.
The Lobster Loop benefits the Canton Middle School PTO. Click here for a mail-in registration form and more information.
