The event, the fourth in Canton’s six-week Summer Concert Series, runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Lions Club members will be on hand to sell food and beverages as the organization continues to raise money to help pay for renovation work at the Mills Pond Park pool house.

Frog, Kids Defy The Heat

"Crabbie"

The godsend of a breeze that was blowing Thursday evening, July 21, in Mills Pond Park was able to camouflage reality only slightly. The broiling bottom line: It was nasty hot, 90 degrees hot in the shade … and miserably muggy … at 6:30 p.m.

That’s when Jeffrey Friedberg and The Bossy Frog Band began a 90-minute performance clearly geared for the kids in the crowd. It was Week 3 of Canton’s Summer Music Series, and the audience was obviously the smallest of the season so far. Nearby, Mills Pond Pool was packed. Anyone shocked?

"Bossy Frog" and the kids.

Still, moms and dads had brought a decent number of children to The Bossy Frog show, at it wasn’t long after “Crabbie” showed up onstage in the opening minutes that about 20 curious kids moved closer to the portable platform for a look.

Friedberg started working them, and then “Bossy Frog” replaced “Crabbie.” By now the kids were singing along and dancing and jumping in the grass, fully engaged. What heat?

Thursday wasn’t the easiest of days for The Bossy Frog Band. Friedberg, the lead guitarist from Nyack, N.Y., bass guitarist Joe Angelori of Yonkers, N.Y., and Jill Liflander, aka “Bossy Frog” and “Crabbie,” of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., had begun their day with a 10:30 a.m. performance at Riverside Park Pier I in Manhattan.

But they weren’t complaining just before showtime, and the kids weren’t complaining about the heat shortly thereafter.

An Evening Of Bluegrass

A look at the Lions Club menu Thursday evening in Mills Pond Park.

A miscommunication resulted in the portable stage being parked several feet to the east of it’s traditional location, but that didn’t seem to bother anyone who came to Mills Pond Park Thursday evening, July 14, to hear the bluegrass sound of Grass Routes.

Another respectable crowd showed up in almost-perfect weather for Week 2 of the town’s Summer Concert Series. Once again, attendees generally looked for spots in the evening shade, and that resulted in two popular viewing areas: atop the hill, which is a good distance from the stage, and on the lower lawn, not far from it.

Lions Club members were back selling food and beverages in their ongoing effort to raise money for some renovation work on the Mills Pond Park pool house.

Entertainment In The Park

The six-week long Summer Concert Series got underway Thursday evening,  July 7, at Mills Pond Park, and a crowd of about 150 was on hand to enjoy the efforts of three musicians from Downright Music & Art in Collinsville.

Downright music teachers Jeff Kozlowski (drums) and Patrick Allers (lead guitar) joined Downright co-owner and teacher Andrew Decker (bass) for a 90-minute show, during which the trio went out of its way to involve the youngsters who came to the park with hula hoops and an eagerness to burn off some energy in front of the portable stage.

Members of the Canton Lions Club were on hand to grill and sell burgers and hot dogs, and they did a brisk business throughout the evening in their effort to help raise money for some renovation work at the Mills Pond Park pool house.

The series resumes on Thursday evening, July 14, with Grass Routes, a bluegrass band from Connecticut.
