Simsbury Borders To Close

The Borders store in Simsbury Commons will close in the coming weeks as part of a bankruptcy reorganization, The Hartford Courant reports.

Borders Group Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection early Wednesday, Feb. 16, and announced it would close six of its 15 Connecticut stores and about 30 percent, or 200, of its superstore locations nationally, according to the paper.

CrossFit Facility Planned

Two Avon men have plans to open a CrossFit training facility on the corner of Dowd Avenue and Dunham Road in the building that was home to Balmar Marine for almost 40 years.

Brian Smith, 35, said he and his partner, Mark Izzo, 34, hope to open the business, CrossFit Legitimus, on March 1. They first need to bring the bathrooms on site up to code and to obtain zoning approval for a change of usage at the location, Smith said.

Smith said the men will first be leasing the site from it’s former owner, Kathleen Lemansky of Avon, but plan to purchase it in the near future. The building has been vacant since the end of last July.

According to the CrossFit Legitimus website, CrossFit training “combines weightlifting, sprinting and gymnastics.” Smith said the regimen is for men and women, even teens, of all abilities, and that workouts are “timed and goal-oriented,” with each participant working at his or her particular fitness level.

Smith said he and Izzo are also partners in Prime Engineered Components, a firm with locations in Watertown and Bristol that makes machine components for the automobile and other industries. The two men have been CrossFit training for two years, Smith said.

CrossFit Legitimus plans to hold four, one-hour classes per day Monday through Friday. The classes would start at 9 a.m. and 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. There would be one Saturday class at 9 a.m.

Smith, who grew up in Vernon, is a former member of the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights parachute team. He said Izzo is originally from in Middlebury and is a former high diver with the University of Connecticut swimming team.

Balmar Marine sold and serviced boat motors and trailers and stored boats at the site over the winter.

Char Koon 1800 Revisited

By Steve Wilder dotCANTON.com

Though she grew up around her father’s restaurant in Glastonbury, Char Koon 1800 owner/manager Lilly Zhao didn’t expect to be a restaurateur after graduating from Simmons College in Boston in May of 2008.

A finance and economics major at Simmons, Zhao, 24, worked briefly in customer service for TD Bank before taking a position in sales with Primerica, a financial services company. She was with Primerica for about a year, she says, before deciding the job, which included working alone much of the time, wasn’t for her.

Enter Mike Zhao, Lilly’s father, who wondered out loud whether his daughter, a graduate of Glastonbury High School, might be interested in running a restaurant.

“It was exciting,” Lilly recalls thinking about the idea, “but it was like, ‘Oh, wow.’ ”

“Oh, wow” turned into “OK,” and Mike Zhao, who opened Char Koon in Glastonbury 17 years ago, set out to find a place. “He never thought of coming to Canton,” Lilly says, “but when he saw the building, he liked it.”

The building, of course, is the 210-year-old structure at 144 Albany Turnpike (Route 44) that was home to Margaritas, the popular establishment that served Mexican food from 1981 until it closed in December of 2009.

Mike Zhao bought the property and began an extensive six-month renovation of the premises. At the same time, Lilly was brushing up on her restaurant skills in Middletown at Forbidden City, which, she says, is partly owned by her father.

Char Koon 1800, which features a variety of Asian cuisine, opened in Canton in mid-July of 2010. Six months later, Lilly is continuing to settle into her role — with help from her father — and likes what she is doing.

“I’m learning a lot of stuff I didn’t learn in school,” she says. Specifically, she mentions the science of marketing. “I think I only took one course in marketing (in college),” she says. “I wish I had taken more.”

And, Lilly says she enjoys interacting with her customers and other “business people” she works with.

Lilly says strengthening its customer base remains a work in progress at Char Koon 1800. The dinner business had been doing nicely — particularly on weekends — until the holidays, she says. It slumped a bit then, but it has bounced back. Takeout business for both lunch and dinner is growing, according to Lilly.

Finding a consistent sit-down lunch crowd has been the biggest challenge, but Lilly says she’s being more aggressive in her marketing in an attempt to lure a larger number of midday customers. She says the economy could be a factor for the sluggishness, and, she says, “a lot of people out there still don’t know we’re here.” Others have told her that Char Koon 1800 looks “fancy,” so they suspect the “prices must be high.”

Lilly says items on the lunch menu range in price from $7.95 to $10.95, and that dinner entrees range from $10.95 to $16.95.

As she continues to move Char Koon 1800 forward, Lilly has been getting plenty of input from her father. “We talk about the business every single day,” she says. “He has a lot of ideas.”

Goodwill Seeking Approval

The Goodwill donation center coming to 217 Albany Turnpike (Route 44) probably won’t open until late February at the earliest.

Because a change in usage will occur for the space, Goodwill must obtain zoning approval before moving in. Goodwill has applied for that approval, and the application is expected to go before the zoning commission on Jan. 19, according to Town Planner Neil Pade. A public hearing will be required, Pade said, and that’s likely to occur in mid-February.

Goodwill plans to occupy the storefront between Ecobody and Sawyer’s Martial Arts, the latter of which recently moved into space that had been home to Boomerangs Resale Outlet. Sawyer’s had been operating at 8 Wickett St. in the Pine Meadow section of New Hartford.

A spokeswoman at Goodwill said donations would be accepted at the staffed center, but nothing would be sold there.

dotCANTON reported on Dec. 5 that Goodwill would be coming to the site.

Coming, Going, On The Move

Photos: dotCANTON

Two new businesses are preparing to open their doors at The Shoppes at Farmington Valley, 110 Albany Turnpike (Route 44).

Francesca’s, top right, and Vein Clinics of America both are expected to open in February, according to Shoppes’ General Manager Denise Robidoux.

Francesca’s, a boutique for women, will occupy space between Leaps & Bones and Barnes & Noble, a site previously home to Everything But Water. Vein Clinics of America, which says it specializes “in the treatment of varicose vein disease,” will be in the old Hollywood Video space.

“This is the first time they’ve gone into a shopping center,” Robidoux said of Vein Clinics. Hickory Farms and Brookstone have closed. Both were “seasonal tenants,” according to Robidoux, who said six storefronts are currently available at the shopping center.

The Bank of America branch in New Hartford, just off Route 44, middle right, is closing. Bank of America spokesman T.J. Crawford says April 1 will be the branch’s last day of operation. Bank of America owns the property, which is for sale, Crawford said.

Verizon, bottom right, has moved from it’s longtime location in the rear of the Avon Marketplace to a spot in the complex that faces Route 44 and now occupies space between Victoria’s Secret and New Balance.

David Waldman, president of David Adam Realty in Westport, the owner of Avon Marketplace, says a TCBY yogurt franchise will open in a portion of Verizon’s former space in “three to four months.”

Waldman says the space now occupied by Verizon was most recently home to The Sharper Image.
