Also At Gallery On The Green …

"Music Stands" (Photograph: from Warwick Middle School Series) / Bill Cifuni

In addition to Robert Dente’s show downstairs, two others opened on Friday, April 22, at Gallery on the Green.

Jon M. Eastman is in the Spotlight Gallery with creations he says were influenced by the likes of “constructivism, dada, art deco, abstract expressionism, pop culture, flea markets, 1950′s design and the ‘green’ or ‘upcycling’ movement.”

According to Eastman, “My work is essentially a hybrid of making art and collecting ‘junk’ or, more specifically, found objects and discarded materials. I’m just as inspired by a vintage paint scraper or television tube as seeing a Jackson Pollock painting; the challenge is to put these elements together and make a new statement.”

Mari Skarp and photographer Bill Cifuni are sharing space in the big room upstairs.

“Over the last three years, my art practice has embraced and integrated both textual research and material investigations into the complex subject of memory,” Skarp says. “My work is influenced by the possibility that memory may have no specific form, and is full of endless possibilities and interpretations.”

Cifuni says he has “always had an interest and appreciation of the past, and much of my artwork is carried by a sense of history, time and place; how they unfold and have us reflect upon our collective memories. The photos and videos I create revolve around two themes: the subtle narrative description of our experiences that materialize within our world, and the threshold of time where these specific moments reside.”

Gallery on the Green is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The three shows currently on display run through May 22.

Big Month For Dance Company

Members of Allongé Dance Variations. Photo: Ron Compton

April is shaping up as an exciting month for Allongé Dance Variations, starting with a “Spring Dinner Fundraiser,” and concluding with two performances of “Once. Again. Now. A Reflection and Celebration,” the company’s fifth anniversary dance concert.

Canton resident Alison Bogatay, the founder and artistic director of Allongé, says the dinner will be held at well-known O’Rourke’s Diner in Middletown from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, with performances of the dance concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 22 and 23, at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford.

Bogatay says the four-course, gourmet meal at O’Rourke’s, 728 Main St. in Middletown, is $45 per person (BYOB), and includes tax, gratuity and a welcome glass of sparkling wine. Reservations can be made by calling Bogatay at 860-693-3290.

Tickets for the two, 90-minute performances at Charter Oak Cultural Center, 21 Charter Oak Ave. in Hartford, are $18 for general admission, and $10 for students, senior citizens, and members of the Charter Oak Cultural Center and Let*s GO Arts! Tickets can be obtained by calling the center at 860-249-1207.

In two nights of eclectic dance and music that Bogatay says embraces “community and collaboration,” Allongé will present 35 professional and emerging artists from Greater Hartford. Among them, according to Bogatay, will be four students from the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford who will dance to “Let the Sunshine In” from the Broadway musical “Hair.”

Color, Texture At Town Hall

Jacqueline Gaztambide at home with "Camaraderie II" from her Impressions series. Photo: dotCANTON

Jacqueline Gaztambide had a serious interest in art as a young girl growing up in San Juan. Predominantly self-taught, she studied briefly in Switzerland at the age of 15 and later in Puerto Rico with local artists.

But when she got married and began to raise a family, Gaztambide put that passion on hold — for about 36 years. Only in the last four years has she allowed herself to fully reconnect with something she clearly loves to do.

"Nebula I" (Space Series II) / Jacqueline Gaztambide

“Some people go through life and don’t find where their passion is,” Gaztambide said Friday, Feb. 25, in her West Hartford home. “Mine was dormant for a while. Finally I said, ‘I want to do this.’ ”

About two dozen of Gaztambide’s paintings will be hanging in the first- and second-floor hallways at Canton Town Hall through the months of March and April. She describes her style as “abstract impressionism.” It’s a style, she says, that’s anchored in nature, the universe and life experiences.

Visitors will notice that the look of Gaztambide’s work changes significantly from series to series. But they’ll also make note of a common thread. As she puts it, “I’m all about color and texture.”

Gaztambide, who lived in Glastonbury for about 18 years before moving to West Hartford on 2005, is a member of the West Hartford Art League and the Canton Artists’ Guild. In addition to the town hall show, her work is also on display at the Noah Webster House in West Hartford. It’s her second solo show there, and it runs through the end of March.

“Camaraderie II” and “Nebula I,” above, and the images in the gallery below are expected to be part of Jacqueline Gaztambide’s two-month show at Canton Town Hall.
