I was looking at the “Sponsor Registration” sheet for the Canton Chamber of Commerce’s 18th Annual Golf Tournament, and noticed that registration and payment are requested by Feb. 28 “to ensure listing in all Tournament promotional material” for the May 26 event at Simsbury Farms Golf Course.
No harm in getting things done well in advance, I thought, but I wondered just for kicks what kind of shape the course was in these days. So I fired up the Honda and took a quick ride out Old Farms Road on Tuesday, Feb. 15, to take a look.
First thing that came to mind as I drove alongside the 18th hole was that conditions weren’t favorable for a lot of role on the fairway — and that they won’t be for quite some time.
It was windy and nasty cold outside the pro shop, the kind of day a good wind jacket would be mandatory. The sign next to the path to the first tee, photo above, suggested that nine holes should be completed in two hours and 10 minutes, and that four hours and 20 minutes was about right for 18.
Jeez, I thought, today it would take about 20 minutes just to scale the pile of plowed snow and ice between me and the first tee box.
Conditions weren’t any better at the path to the 10th tee, photo below, so I decided enough was enough and I retreated to the warmth of my car. I gotta believe the course will be in better shape on May 26. Let’s hope so, anyway.
