Tucker, Canton’s first official top dog, braved the heat Tuesday, July 6, just long enough to fetch Tag #1 and pose politely for a few late afternoon pictures at town hall.
A poised, 14-year-old English springer spaniel who lives in Canton Center with family members John and Enid Herd, Tucker was selected in a random drawing last week that included all dogs in town whose licenses were renewed by June 30.
Tucker gets to keep his green, dog bone-shaped Tag #1 through June 30, 2011.
The pride of Canton canines also was glad to accept a basket full of goodies assembled by Town Clerk Linda Smith. Included were some tasty treats no dog could refuse, a water bowl, squeak toys and a new leash.
Tucker elected not to answer
questions from the press, but Enid spoke when asked how Canton’s top dog was coping with the blistering heat.
“We don’t have air-conditioning,” Enid said, “so he sits on the cold tile in the kitchen.”
Smart dog. If this weather sticks around as long as expected, plenty of humans will be following Tucker’s lead.
