Sunshine and blue sky is visible from Mills Pond Park beyond the back edge of a line of clouds that produced an evening downpour in Canton, Thursday, June 24. Earlier Thursday, a serious storm in Bridgeport, possibly a tornado, damaged buildings and caused numerous injuries. No deaths were reported in the hours immediately after the storm. Photo: dotCANTON

Owner Steven Day has suspended operations at The Riverpath Cafe′ in Collinsville, less than a month after it opened.
“It was kind of a gamble,” Day said Wednesday, June 23, “but I just didn’t get the business I wanted.”

Day, who also owns the popular Village Cafe and Bistro in Canton Village, didn’t want one establishment to subsidize the other.
“I don’t want to put this business (the Village Cafe) in jeopardy,” Day said.
Day acknowledged that the difficult-to-spot location of the The Riverpath Cafe′ at 41 Bridge St. might have been a factor.
“Location determines a lot,” Day said. “This place (the Village Cafe) is in the heart of the plaza. I was thinking, Collinsville, I see people walking around (he lives nearby) … I’m thinking this will be easy. It wasn’t.”
Day said he will continue to use the kitchen at the Bridge Street address to cater events in the banquet hall at the same location. He left open the possibility of reopening the storefront at some point.
“I’m open to it,” he said. “I don’t want to rule it out.”

Time will tell if the winners in the drawing at Leaps & Bones in Canton on Thursday, June 24, will celebrate their good fortune by woofing it up in front of their neighbors.
But it’s a virtual certainty their dogs will be licking their chops over the opportunity to enjoy the sights and sniffs of a minor league ballpark … and to spend some time with perhaps a couple hundred other tail-wagging fans of anything that has to do with a ball.

Leaps & Bones, which is located in The Shoppes at Farmington Valley complex and bills itself as “your one stop shop for all things dog,” will be giving away 20 tickets to “Bark In The Park Day” at New Britain Stadium. On Monday evening, June 28, owners and their dogs will be invited to participate in a pregame parade on the field before settling in to enjoy the Rock Cats’ game against the Trenton Thunder, the Double A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
One can only wonder if the dogs will be rooting for or against the Rock Cats, or if one or two might feel the urge to fetch a foul ball into the stands or a ball in play somewhere in the infield.

Curves for Women franchise owner Linda Cansdale says the fitness center’s new space in Canton at 163 Albany Turnpike (Route 44) measures about 650 square feet, not counting loft space. That’s certainly a smaller area than what it had at 250 Albany Turnpike for many years.
The difference: “We weren’t using all the space there,” she says. “There was a lot of wasted space.”
Cansdale, who said she has been the franchise owner for “about two years,” believes Canton Curves occupied it’s former location for about a decade. Curves relocated on June 1.

AROUND TOWN: Jordan Stein is now targeting August for the opening of his new restaurant at 105 Main St. in the heart of Collinsville. That’s a little later than he originally had hoped.
Stein, a managing partner at the Pond House Cafe’ in Elizabeth Park off Asylum Avenue in West Hartford, last month described his vision of the restaurant as “almost a hipster taco joint with a New England industrial feel.”
Stein is a resident of Collinsville. (See May 25 post.)
